10th October marks World Mental Health Day. Over the years, I have seen many children and families struggle to cope with their food allergy especially because of the fear of anaphylaxis. A great starting point is providing accurate information about risks with peanut, sesame, milk and egg allergy. For instance, although anaphylaxis can be life threatening, it is a very rare event and 80% of anaphylaxis get better with no treatment (although we would never suggest not treating) and 99% respond to 2-3 doses of adrenaline.

It is impossible to eliminate risk but you can reduce the risk. For instance, its very difficult to eliminate the risk of a reaction to peanut. So i like to use analogies such as crossing a road; you can't eliminate the risk of being run over but you can reduce it significantly by taking certain steps. This empowers you to be able to cross a road safely!

At Children's Allergy Cambridge, our children's allergy specialist likes to spend time with you and provide a holistic approach to improve the lives of children with allergies.
