Pet Allergies Cambridge

Dr Gary Stiefel has been a Consultant in Paediatric Allergy at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust since 2012. He is the current lead for the Childrens’ allergy service. It is one of the largest clinics in the UK and offers a comprehensive service.

Dr Gary Stiefel has significant expertise in the following areas:

  • Preventing, diagnosing & managing food allergy (IgE-mediated & Non IgE-mediated food allergy including FPIES)

  • Atopic dermatitis (eczema)

  • Spontaneous & chronic urticaria (hives)

  • Allergic rhinitis due to tree or grass pollen (hay fever) and house dust mite

  • Pet allergies including cat, dog and horse

Paediatric allergy services

  • Every visit focuses on an accurate assessment and specialist interpretation of allergy tests to make a diagnosis, a practical day-to-day plan, and clear guidance for home and school.

​​Food allergy care
 

  • IgE and non-IgE food allergy: peanut, tree nuts, egg, milk, sesame, wheat and others. Practical information on milk and egg ladders.

  • FPIES and pollen-food syndrome (oral allergy syndrome).

  • Emergency readiness: BSACI allergy action plans and adrenaline auto-injector training when indicated.

Eczema & Skin

  • Eczema (atopic dermatitis) assessment and management with age-appropriate skin-care routines and flare control.
     

  • Trigger review and a practical home plan, including emollient/steroid/topical calcineurin Inhibitor (TCI) guidance.

Hay fever & allergic rhinitis

  • Strategies for grass/tree and house-dust-mite allergy.

  • Day-to-day symptom control for home and school; immunotherapy assessment and treatment where suitable.

Tests we offer

Skin prick testing (SPT): Performed by a specialist allergy nurse and results within 15 minutes. Antihistamines need to be stopped 4 days before. 

Specific IgE blood tests: used when history suggests value or when SPT isn’t suitable; Specialist interpretation provided as it is not a simple yes / no answer.

 

Oral food challenges (OFC): Currently this is not available but will be in the coming months. We have partnered with Allergy London to support this if required.

Treatments we offer

Allergen immunotherapy assessment and provision for aeroallergen immunotherapy such as grass, tree, house dust mite, cat, dog and horse : suitability review for aeroallergen immunotherapy (e.g., hay fever), with discussion of options although we offer SLIT options.
 
Oral Immunotherapy (OIT) assessment and discussion. Currently, we are unable to offer this but can refer to Allergy London for this if deemed appropriate.

Nutrition, weaning & re-introduction

  • Practical, staged advice (including weaning) and safe alternatives.
     

  • When and how to consider supervised re-exposure or an oral food challenge.

School & nursery support

  • BSACI emergency allergy action plans and clear letters for settings.

  • What to avoid, what to watch for, and what to do.
